Human-Neanderthal Sex

Humans and Neanderthals were close enough to have viable offspring.  Modern humans seem to believe that by giving organisms a name they can define them to be of different species and they can do that because species is a word defined by modern humans.  The King James Bible uses the word "kind" to separate animals into groups capable of producing offspring.  Does anyone know the equivalent modern word for "kind"?  The Biblical word "kind" seems to actually describe something real rather than being an arbitrary definition.
